Six Canadian university programs offer this training
Several accredited music therapists have obtained their master's degree in music therapy. In recent years, a growing number of accredited music therapists are also pursuing doctoral studies in music therapy or or in a related field. The AQM believes that the entry level for music therapy training should be a Master’s level within the next few years.
Information on the PhD Program:
To practice their profession, a music therapists must be accredited by the Canadian Association for Music Therapy and remain active members in good standing in order to maintain their status as accredited music therapists (MTA). An internship including 1,000 hours of supervised clinical practice by an MTA is a requirement for accreditation. There are also several provincial music therapy associations across Canada, including the Quebec Association for Music Therapy of which most Quebec accredited music therapists are also active members.
